Thursday nights at Petersham
Alchemy rehearses at Petersham Salvation Army in Sydney's inner west on Thursday nights from 7.30pm - 9.30pm, with a cup of tea & a Tim-Tam to break up the rehearsal.
The rehearsals generally follow the NSW school terms, however, we often do rehearse just to keep the momentum going.
Membership is through an audition process in which we listen for pitch, voice control, style, etc. Sight-singing is helpful but not required, commitment to the group and a good sense of humour.
The atmosphere is one of laughter. With concentration and encouragement the choir can learn a song in one night. Harder songs obviously take a bit longer, but we like to do challenging songs to balance the less complex ones.
Alchemy is a group of talented singers who love singing and performing. Choir members come from a variety of backgrounds and professions. Singing is our semi-professional hobby so we achieve a lot in each rehearsal and this adds to the professional quality of the sound.
Like all choirs in Sydney, we are always looking for male singers - tenors, baritones and basses.
Currently (May 2008), membership costs $30.00 per year with $10.00 supper 'kitty' contribution. All income from gigs is banked into Alchemy's bank account. The main expenses are advertising for singers, repertoire development and concert expenses.
The choir is run via incorporation and therefore we have committee meetings on an ad hoc basis and and annual general meeting held in March. We report our financial statement to the Department of Fair Trading.
The Musical Director is not paid and, as a member of the incorporation, pays membership fees as do all members.
The love of singing and music and friendship is worth more than money could pay!
